DECONSTRUCTIONISM, THE LEFT, AND “AMERICA NEVER GREAT”

Governor Andrew Cuomo created a stir with his recent dismissal of his nation:

·       “We’re not going to make America great again — it was never that great,” Cuomo told the audience, which reacted with gasps and laughter. (Huffington Press)

He understood his audience, and Cuomo pandered to them with these words. Consequently, it was met with applause. However, it is evident that he later realized the political implications of his words and understood that he would pay for them at the ballot box. He therefore “redefined” his comment:

·       “I want to be very clear: Of course America is great and of course America has always been great,” Cuomo, a Democrat, told reporters on a conference call. “My family is evidence of American greatness.”

Of course, his retraction should cause some degree of skepticism. It seems a bit disingenuous to go from “never that great” to “always been great.” Besides, he offers his family as evidence of America’s greatness. However, he had also stated, “We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged.” So how does his family being great have anything to do with America being fully engaged? It doesn’t!

However, right after his retraction, Huffington reports:

Again, we are left to connect the dots. How could America have “always been great,” and yet America had “a time of greater intolerance and inequality?” This is another perplexing statement.

America has certainly had its sins. However, we have been good about admitting and apologizing for them, something that many other nations would not even consider doing.

My main concern is about what his words, “it was never that great,” reflect about the Left and the people who had cheered Cuomo’s words. These words reflect the agenda of the Left to divide and conquer. How? By deconstructing the good of this nation and by emphasizing nothing but the bad! Why? When American’s find nothing good about this nation, they will reject it in favor of something else. If you are convinced by the termite man that your house is infested and about to fall, you will buy the recommended treatment, even if it requires a total overhaul. The Left has convinced the youth that this nation requires a total overhaul.

The Left boasts that it has won the culture war, and their boast has merit. They control the universities, schools, media, and entertainment to such a degree, that any diverse opinions can be easily silenced. They have also succeeded in silencing any doubts about their Leftist in the minds of the youth, which have become violently turned against those who rebel. The Left has won and now controls the minds, and when the minds are controlled so too are the actions. Antifa is a prime example of its fruits.

This is why Cuomo can say America “was never great” to the approving applause. If it was never great, it must be overhauled, radically.

Alexis de Tocqueville, French statesman, historian and social philosopher, wrote “Democracy in America” (1835). It has been described as "the most comprehensive and penetrating analysis of the relationship between character and society in America that has ever been written." Tocqueville would have sharply disagreed with Cuomo. The world was observing America’s greatness and Tocqueville came in hope of understanding the source of this greatness:

·       I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors...in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.

Tocqueville found the source of America’s greatness in the Church, the very thing that the Left has always sought to destroy, and they are succeeding. But according to Tocqueville’s analysis, when the Church is silenced, its words will no longer nurture the garden. Expect the destruction that has inevitably accompanied the Left! Yet, our Lord reigns!
