Skeptics claim that there is no evidence of the supernatural. I told one skeptic several about some miraculous events, which I had experienced. Predictably, he responded, “There are natural explanations for all of these events.”

Although I wasn’t surprised, I felt that all of these events contained strong evidences of the supernatural. Therefore, I asked, “What evidence for the supernatural would you find convincing?” I was surprised by his answer. He admitted that he probably wouldn’t be convinced by any evidence for a miracle or the supernatural. Even if Jesus appeared and asked him, “Why don’t you believe in Me?” he would merely ascribe this to a hallucination.

His belief system would not allow him to be moved by any evidence of the supernatural. Therefore, I asked him, “What evidence do you have than any thing or any cause is natural?”

There is not a shred of evidence that anything is natural. Sometimes, people answer, “Snowflakes and crystals form naturally.” However, even the smallest atom or snowflake is a marvel of design. Besides, claiming that snowflakes and crystals form naturally wrongly assumes, without evidence, that the chemical structures of their minerals and water, which had brought them into existence, are natural.   

In addition to this, the claim that snowflakes and crystals are naturally formed or caused is based upon an unfounded assumption that the laws of science are natural. However, they too bear the appearance of design. Take the formula for the gravitational attraction between two bodies:

Gravitational Attraction  =  1/ (distance between two bodies)²

Here’s how it works. Let’s say that we weigh 100 pounds here on the surface of the earth (4,000 miles from the center of the earth). If instead we were twice as far from the center (2x²), we would weigh 25 pounds! About this apparent elegance, Donald DeYoung had written:

·       “Scientist have long wondered about the factor of [superscript] 2 in this expression. It simply looks “too neat.” In an evolved universe, one would not expect such a simple relationship. For example, why isn’t the distance factor 1.99 or 2.001? The gravity force has been repeatedly tested with sensitive torsion balances, showing that the factor is indeed precisely 2…Any value other than 2 would lead to an eventual catastrophic decay of orbits and of the entire universe” (Astronomy and the Bible, 137-38)

Such precision cannot be the product of chance or an explosion we call the “Big Bang.” Nor is this formula unusual in its beauty and elegance. The whole world of physics speaks of a Designer. Take for example our most famous formula, E = MC² (Energy = Mass x Speed of Light squared)—which enables science to calculate how much energy you have in your very impressive body. Again, we see elegance which points strongly to design.

Is there any evidence that anything has ever been caused naturally? No one has ever been able to offer any. Nevertheless, naturalism has captured the minds of the university and the laboratory, excluding God from consideration. However, from every indication, this is God’s world and it bears His Name. Why then are there atheists? Because they do not want to believe that there is a God:

·       They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. (Ephesians 4:18)

However, before we look down on them, we must remember the darkness from which we had been plucked (1 Corinthians 1:26-29; Titus 3:2-4).
