John 8:31–32 So Jesus said to the Jews
who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and
you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Spiritual freedom happens
gradually as we grow in the truths of the teachings of God. It is
the source of all God’s blessings: 2 Peter 1:2–4 May grace and peace be
multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His
divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and
excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises,
so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature,
having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of
sinful desire.
Free from our
bondage to sin: John 8:34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to
you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.”

When we sin without confessing/repenting we
invite sin to take control: Romans 6:16 Do you not know that if you
present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom
you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness?
Free from the
bondage of the law:

Galatians 5:1 For freedom Christ has set
us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery
[the Law].

Galatians 5:13–14 For you were called to
freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the
flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in
one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

How can the requirement to love set us free?
The freedom to understand:
2 Timothy 2:24–26 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but
kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his
opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a
knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape
from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.
(Isaiah 61:1-)
The freedom to know
that we are beloved: Romans 5:8–10 God shows his love for us in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now
been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath
of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of
his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
The freedom to
commune directly and joyfully with our Lord: Hebrews 10:19–22 Therefore,
brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of
Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain,
that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of
God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our
hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure
water.
We will
be set free from the sin nature: Romans 8:21,23 …creation itself will
be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the
glory of the children of God…And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who
have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for
adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Therefore, we long
for the return of our Savior.
