The LGBT lobby is still intent on proving that the Bible
doesn’t speak against homosexuality. Bart D. Ehrman is a Bible critic and a
leader of this lobby. He posted on his blog:
·
When people want to show that the Bible condemns
same-sex relations – either to justify depriving LGBTQ people of civil rights,
to condemn them morally, to preclude them from serving in church offices, or
even to participate at all in faith communities (or for any other reason) –
there are a few passages that typically get cited, usually with vigor.
I chose one verse and responded:
The context is always
king. In this context Paul equates homosexuality with “dishonorable passions,” “shameless
acts,” and exchanging “natural relations” for what is unnatural”:
·
Romans
1:26-27 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their
women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural
relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men
committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty
for their error.
What are these “dishonorable
passions?” Paul defines these: “women exchanged natural relations for those
that are contrary to nature; 27 and the
men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with
passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men…”
Could the women have been engaging in “anal sex” as you allege? Clearly not! Verse 27 defines these unnatural relations (“shameless acts”) – men having sex with “one another” as the women were having with other women.
There is nothing unclear about this context. Besides, it agrees with the rest of the Biblical revelation, which consistently condemns homosexuality. In fact, there is not one verse in the entirety of the Scriptures that even gives the slightest green-light to homosexuality. Even many of the LGBT lobby agree.
