BEING MORAL FOR ITS BENEFITS

Many try to live the virtuous life for its benefits, and there are benefits. It serves us better to be good to others than to hurt them. However, they stop short of believing in Jesus, because, for them, the Gospel is a “fairy tale.”

Nevertheless, they recognize the many benefits in believing in Jesus – hope, the joy of knowing that we are forgiven and eternally beloved, objective moral truths, and a purpose for living. Many even admit that they wish that they too could believe because of these benefits.

Meanwhile, they are willing to believe in morality, freewill, and purpose even though they do not believe that these things actually exist apart from their own minds and feelings. Why not then add Jesus to their list? Jesus even encourages them to take Him for a trial run:

·       So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. (John 7:16-17)
