The Bombardier Beetle
is a design marvel. They also clearly defy any Darwinian explanation.
·
The bombardier beetle’s tail end is equipped
with twin “spray nozzles” (or gland openings) to shoot its gaseous ammunition.
The gas comes from two reactant chemicals—hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinone.
When the beetle contracts its sphincter muscle, these two chemicals mix with
catalytic enzymes. The ensuing chemical reaction brings the temperature up to
water’s boiling point. While the one-way valve closes to protect the beetle’s
organs, out fires the mixture of gas and steam at 212 degrees Fahrenheit
(100°C). Some types of bombardier beetles can swivel their gland openings and
shoot in nearly all directions using deflection plates. All types hit their
target with a marksman’s precision.
·
The emissions fire in pulsation, 500 times per
second, but the defensive attack is complete before one second passes. https://answersingenesis.org/creepy-crawlies/insects/bombardier-beetle-arsenal-insect/
They have a perception system, ejection system with “spray
nozzles,” explosive chemicals, and also an anti-inhibitor to neutralize the
inhibitor, which keeps these chemicals from exploding, until just the right
time:
·
In a separate compartment, an anti-inhibitor
waits for the right moment to neutralize the inhibitor. So at the exact moment
the beetle wants to fire at an enemy, the anti-inhibitor is squirted through a tube
to unite with the other two chemicals, which are squirted through their
separate tube. This anti-inhibitor neutralizes the inhibitor so that the two
chemicals are free to react violently together and explode. (Erwin Lutzer, Seven Reasons you can Trust the Bible,
136)
Timing is everything:
·
Added to this is the need for a complex
communication system so that the anti-inhibitor is ejected at just the right
time! (137)
If the timing is off, the beetle will explode or the
chemical will spray without effect. These various systems must be precisely
fine-tuned to operate harmoniously. Besides, they all have to be in place
simultaneously, or the beetle will not survive. There is no room for trial-and-error.
Darwinian gradualism cannot satisfactorily account for the
necessity of various precisely functioning systems to be simultaneously in
place. Therefore, Answers in Genesis
wrote that if this complex defensive system had been constructed piecemeal, the
beetle wouldn’t have survived:
·
From the evolutionary worldview, the
functionless machinery would have been selected against, since it would add no
survival value until all of the necessary components were in place.
Therefore, the most logical conclusion is that this
apparatus had been designed as is. In fact, the design is so brilliant that:
·
By examining the design of the bombardier
beetle’s defense spray mechanism, scientists have built a similar nozzle to
improve fuel, medical, and agricultural technology. (Answers)
This is not surprising. Every organ and perceptual system is
a marvel, which presents our scientists with valuable lessons. How unbelievable
that random mutations, of which the vast majority are deleterious, might instruct
science in how to make technological advancements!
