The writer George Bernard Shaw had famously stated:
·
The fact that a believer is happier than a
skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier
than a sober one.
However, the drunkard will not remain happy for very long,
and he will soon find that he has been paying a heavy price for his “happy”
escape. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case for convinced faithful Christians.
They have no need of a detox; nor are they found sleeping in the street covered
with urine and feces.
Former atheist, Patrick Glynn, claimed that the benefits of
Christian living were apparent over a very wide spectrum of measures including
happy marriages:
·
A 1978 study found that church attendance
predicted marital satisfaction better than any other single variable. Couples
in long-lasting marriages who were surveyed in another study listed religion as
one of the most important “prescriptions” of a happy marriage. (God: The Evidence, 64)
This could hardly be said for most alcoholics.
